Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi
Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi was born on August 11, 1957 in Wamanafo where he had his elementary education. In 1972-79, he did his secondary education at St. Hubert Minor Seminary, Kumasi. He continued his seminary formation at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu, Cape Coast. On 27 July 1985, he was ordained priest by the late Most Rev. James Owusu in Wamanafo.
After his ordination, he served as assisting priest at the Christ the King Cathedral until January 1987. From January 1987 to September 1987, he served as Chaplain and teacher at the St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College, Bechem. In the same year, he matriculated at the University of Ghana, Legon to read Geography and Resource Development, and History. He graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts, First Class Degree. He was acting parish priest at Kenyasi, and Chaplain and teacher at Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Girls’ Secondary School until 1991 when he was appointed Vice Rector at St. James Seminary in Abesim.
In 1993, he left for further studies in Canada, earning a PhD in Geography and a Master’s Degree in Education. On his return to Ghana in 1999, he was appointed Rector at St. James Seminary/Secondary School. In addition to his office of Rector, he was appointed as Chancellor of the Sunyani Diocese in 2001. The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, elected him Bishop of Sunyani on 14 April 2003. He was ordained Bishop on 28 June 2003. |
